Snaffle Bits

Horse riding bits designed to be used with direct contact from the rider, through the reins, to the horse's mouth. Snaffles usually have broken mouthpieces. Direct contact bits are used for starting colts, driving carts, and aged horses that are well broken. It is a good bit without a lot of harsh leverage on your horse. Because of this, it also takes a skilled rider to stop a runaway horse with these bits. A sawing motion, or pull and release again and again will usually work well. Sawing the bit will work to confuse the horse into slowing or changing his thought, so that a new direction can be trained. Sawing is not to be harsh, but works well when applied in quick motions.

I believe in using the most soft bits I have and progressing as needed to the next stage of control. When starting horses, set a goal of achieving little steps a long your way. Do not get discouraged if it seems to go slow. Slow & steady wins a relationship. And when the horse does something right, I like to end a training session on a good note. Makes me feel good, and other trainers say it helps the horse too!  -  Chuck

Traditional Loose Ring 3/8" Smooth Sweet Iron Snaffle Bit
This classic snaffle bit has been the top choice of trainers and riders through the ages. The combination of the slightly weighted rings with an average size of 3/8" smooth snaffle makes the bit perfectly balanced for training & everyday riding. The weight of the ring increases feel for both the horse horse & rider which gives the horse pre-signals to rein cues and provides clear communication. Sweet iron naturally rusts into a light patina. The rusting creates a sweet taste or the horse's mouth, making the bit more acceptable and increasing salivation for a supple mouth.   3" Rings, 5" Mouth    STAGE A
