CULTURED COWBOY PRESENTS

Barrel Racing Bits

Barrel bits - A category of riding bits that Cultured Cowboy decided to have as a specialty bit page. We group this group of gymkhana bits because Reinsman has developed these from some of the best barrel racing cowgirls in this world. Charmayne James, Sharon Camarillo, Molly Powell, and Martha Josey are some of the "big girls" who have the experience of many hours in their saddles and the know how to help with bits designed to help your horse win.

Just like a golf pro has more than one club in his bag, any pro racer needs a bevy of bits to try. I know from my experience that changing bits can help a smart horse stay at the top of its game. The change  can reduce boredom, increase responsiveness and cut time. Often, 3 similar bits can be rotated. And, many of the bits on other pages of our Cultured Cowboy website have other bits that are very effective for your sport. I still like an Argentine snaffle for lots of stuff.

Word has it that I prefer Cowgirl's Barrel Racing. (Probably got the idea from my long blonde hair.) Kudos to some of our local Barrel Racers: Jim Warner, Mike Green, & Talmadge Green all guys running NBHA!  - Chuck

Charmayne James says that her relationship with Reinsman as manufacturer has taken her line of C11 Bits to the best possible level.  You will notice that on many of her bits, a curb strap or chain with 3" extra length works  well. And CJ has a good line of spurs to add to this collection too.

STAGE A bits: Are you riding with both hands? Stage A bits are great for starting horses, training, or maintaining steady contact. Aspects include direct reining, non-leverage Loose Rings and Dee Rings with mouthpiece diameters 5/16" and over.

Stage B bits: Moving away from direct reining to Neck reining? Stage  B is all about transition, with the introduction of leverage and curb pressure. Short shanked bits and half-gag comprise STAGE B.

STAGE C bits: Where neck reining is a way of life.  Horses who respond well to poll pressure are in Stage C. Features include solid mouthpieces and cheek attachments, and swivel cheeks with jointed mouthpieces or low to medium ports.

STAGE D bits: Are we talking or whispering?  Stage D is about refinement, subtle cues and quick communication. Characteristics include increased leverage, more sophisticated mouthpieces and may also incorporate higher ports.

STAGE E bits: Call in the specialists!  When your horse enters Stage E, he is asking for some time with the Pros. Here tiny twists, very high ports, and highly complex mouthpieces are key components.

The Rookie - 3/8" Sweet Iron Snaffle Bit
This line of bits was designed for the rookie competition horses and those in training that are ready to move out of the ring snaffle bit. The curved smooth snaffle is for the horse that you are trying to build confidence in the bend. I would use this bit on a well broke & well mannered horse.  Sweet iron mouth promotes salivation & relaxation.   5" Cheeks  5 1/2" Mouth   No Port.   STAGE B
The Rookie - Large Sweet Iron Chain Bit
The chain mouthpiece is a pleasing bit for most horses and encourages bend in the turn. Chain mouthpieces offer you the option of being able to handle your horse and keep his mouth fresh for other bits. Generally, horses keep a nice soft mouth in a chain bit like this.  5" Cheeks  5 1/2" Mouth   No Port.   STAGE B
The Rookie - 3/8" Sweet Iron Twisted Snaffle Bit
The twisted wire snaffle mouthpiece in this bit will offer a little more feel than the smooth snaffle. If you have a horse that is stepping up his speed and needs a little help in the turns, this will be the bit you will love. I will use this on a horse that wants to be a little stiffer in his turns as it will encourage bend. Most horses love this bit.   5" Cheeks  5 1/2" Mouth   No Port.   STAGE B

The Rookie - 3/8" Twisted Sweet Iron Dogbone Bit
This is one of my favorite bits to use on my colts that are just getting into a shank bit. The three piece mouth in this bit allows  me to introduce the curb chain to my young horses and still keep them confident when I pull on them in the turns. If you ride young horses, you need this bit in your collection. It's definitely one of my "go to" bits!  5" Cheeks  5 1/2" Mouth   No Port.  STAGE B
The Freshman - Large Sweet Iron Chain Bit
I love the way the Freshman bit works on my moderately aggressive horses that are sensitive and/or in their first years of competition. Horses accept this bit well in transitioning up in control from my "rookie" bit. The chain mouth invites a great headset, while the short shank & curb chain provide just a little control to help make a great turn!  6" Cheeks  5 1/2" Mouth   No Port.   STAGE B
Maximum Performance - Large Sweet Iron Chain Bit
The chain mouthpiece is a pleasing to a horse that may reject a port or a snaffle. Allows you to pull on a horse in a turn and his mouth won't get hard or dull because the chain always seems to keep a horse fresh. Just the right amount of draw on the shanks, this is a great feeling bit.  7" Cheeks  5 1/4" Mouth   No Port.   STAGE C

Primarily used to lift head and shoulders for more control in speed events. This bit will give you the option to pull on your horse a little more while asking him to turn a bigger pattern. It also adds to the willingness of the horse to use its hind end.   7" Cheeks  5 1/4" Mouth   1 3/4" Port.   STAGE C
Maximum Performance - Sweet Iron Broken Port Bit
This bit will help you to gain rate and turn in a hard running horse, while running advanced horses on the bigger patterns where you need to be able to rate them for a turn. This bit will help you to gain confidence in your turns for a horse that has not been turning well.    7" Cheeks  5 1/2" Mouth   2" Port.   STAGE C
Maximum Performance - 3/8" Medium Twisted Sweet Iron Dogbone Bit

The Money Maker chain bit is the bit that I use on a horse that isn't happy with the snaffles. Money Maker - 3/8" Twisted Sweet Iron Snaffle Bit
The Money Maker twisted snaffle bit is a very versatile bit that works great on just about any horse. I use this bit indoors a lot to keep my horse balanced & round in a turn.   7" Cheeks  5 1/2" Mouth   No Port.   STAGE C

Long Shank Solid Run - Silver Large Sweet Iron Chain Bit
This bit gives a lot of leverage in a turn and is what I recommend for a stronger horse. The longer shank will help lift a horse's shoulder and keep him from cutting off his pocket going into a turn. This chain mouthpiece is pleasing to a horse that may reject a snaffle or port.

9" Cheeks  5" Mouth   No Port.    STAGE E

Rate & Turn - Sweet High Port Chain Bit
I love this bit on my younger horses that are just finding their speed in their run. This medium shank version of the "Rate & Turn" still gives me some rate but keeps the bend in our turns. This bit also provides a moderate amount of lift on a horse crowding a turn.

7" Cheeks  5 1/2" Mouth   1 5/8" ? Port.     STAGE C

Rate & Turn - 5/16" Sweet Iron Wide Broken Port Bit
This Rate & Turn bit with medium cheeks will be the perfect bit for horses that are over-bendy or want to drop into their turns too soon. I use this bit to help rate & turn moderately aggressive horses, and the longer shanked version on the more aggressive ones. Great competition bit!

Rate & Turn - Sweet Iron Broken Port Bit
This bit will help you to gain rate and turn in a hard running horse. I will use this bit on  a stronger horse, while running advanced horses on the bigger patterns where  I need to be able to rate them for a turn. This bit will help you to have confidence in your turns for a horse that has not been turning well. It is a very pleasing bit that I have used on a lot of horses.

Rate & Turn - Large Sweet Iron Ported Chain Bit
This bit will give you the option to pull your horse a little more when asking him to turn on a bigger pattern. You will have a little more bend with this bit than the Broken Ported bit, but still have some control to stop your horse on a run.

8" Cheeks  5 1/2" Mouth   1 5/8" Port.     STAGE D

Smooth Run - 3/8" Smooth Sweet Iron Snaffle Bit
I call the Smooth Run my "happy bit" because it will make a sensitive or irritable horse relax about his mouth. This bit is a "must have" for a hard to please horse. This bit will also help to build confidence and and aggression in your horse, while providing a moderate amount of control.

Smooth Run - 3/8" Smooth Sweet Iron Snaffle Bit
This is my idea of the ultimate barrel racing competition bit. I can put it on a soft mouth horse using a flat curb chain and get a well balanced run out of him. Then as I shorten the curb chain, I can step up the severity of the bit and gain more control if I need it. I have used this bit on young & old horses to coin a lot of money. This is a pleasing bit to almost any horse.

9" Cheeks  5 1/2" Mouth   No Port.    STAGE E

Long Shank Combination - 7/17" Large Twisted Sweet Iron Snaffle Bit
I This is my favorite bit to run a horse that has a tendency to overrun the first barrel. I generally use it on a horse that is solid in his training because of the long shanks. What makes this bit unique is that it has enough control to help you get by the tight barrel turns, and it's well accepted that may not be used to so much control. There is a lot of "give" to this bit with the curved mouthpiece and the gag effect on the shanks. The first time I use this bit on a horse, I adjust the curb chain a little looser and then tighten it accordingly as I need more control.

Jim Warner lives pretty close to home, here in Greenwood SC. We try to keep his bits in stock, because of their popularity. In fact, of the better barrel racing bits, they are among our best Internet sellers. These are proven to be winning bits from the many riders using them every day. Thanks for your contributions, Jim.

Rope Nose Hackamore

Rope nose for more control. Chuck -  When new, I have used a hair dryer to lightly heat the rope noseband to get it to bend or form as I like over the nose of my horse.  This helps it break in just right.  Shanks are designed to swivel for excellent flex.   7" Cheeks    STAGE D

Where would Barrel Racing be today, if not for the efforts and trials of the Josey Ranch? One of the first Farnam Training Videos was that of Martha Josey. I have a copy on "tape". I have recommended many of her training tips from that video to hundreds of gymkhana participants who have seen, some of them, dramatic improvements in skills and performance. Get you one!
These bits have proven themselves, not only in our Josey Clinics, Schools, & Seminars, but also in competitions around the world - Martha

5/16" Million Dollar Rope Nose Hackamore Bit
The Million Dollar bit has won a lot of money for many riders. This bit features a stainless steel three-piece twisted wire dogbone snaffle mouthpiece & a rope noseband. Equipped with a 5" shank, the Million Dollar bit is ideal because pressure is evenly distributed on the nose, bars, corners of the mouth, & poll. This bit is one of our all time proven favorites at the Josey Ranch.  Use this bit for achieving the all-important flex you need from a well balanced bit.

5/16" Prime Time Rope Nose Hackamore Bit
The Prime Time bit is the same as the Million Dollar bit, but features a blue finish,  silver beads, and silver overlay. This bit will not only get the job done, but will add that extra "flash" at your next rodeo or horse show.  Use this bit for bend, lift & moderate rate.

5/16" Long Shank Combination Rope Nose Hackamore Bit
CThe Long Shank Combination bit is the same as the Million Dollar bit, but features more control & leverage from the 8.5 inch shanks.  It helps to correct a horse that drops a shoulder in the turn. Because of its unique design, you can lift & move the shoulder to keep the horse from hitting the barrels or poles. Pressure is applied on the nose, and jaw offering collection, rate & whoa.  Use this bit for a rider that needs a little more control, or a high powered speed horse.

3/8" O-Ring Combination Bit
Use this bit for training a young horse or for a competition horse that is already patterned. Features a copper wrapped mullen mouthpiece with a rope noseband. The combination of the rope noseband with the copper wrapped mullen mouthpiece helps top get your horse's nose & round out the turn.  Copper mouthpiece also keeps the horse's mouth moist which makes the horse more willing to be trained. This bit is a favorite of many timed event riders because it is such a proven winner.    3 1/4

3/8" Go-Around Bit
The Go-Around bit features a brown iron, low port mouthpiece that is very comfy for many horses. This bit provides excellent handling qualities. The 'stops' on the shanks help the mouthpiece stay in place & the rider gets the right amount of gag action. This bit can really package a horse up, keeping him collected & snappy in the turns.     8

Martha Josey Sidewinder Spur
Silver with raised silver hearts. Engages easily with slight sqeeze of the legs. Great for putting a horse in position for those snappy turns. (Chuck - My first riding spurs were side turned rowels. I found them to be effective without "gooching" young horses. With a little practice you learn to "roll" into the horse's side increasing pressure until it works with that horse. I also found this great to sit on the horse, relax my legs and applying light pressure, after a workout, desensitize the sides of horses that were overly ticklish.)  Martha has added some upward lift to the shank for easier effectiveness.   7/8" band. 10 point rowel. 1 5/8" shank.  Ladies size will fit youth.  7/8" Band, Sidewinder
