Cowboy Application  – A Cowboy lifestyle fast teaches us to be watchful. Our livestock needs constant watch for safety against predators, caution to ensure their physical health, and forethought to avoid injury.  An experienced “hand” can recognize places of safety for his herds and for his team mates.  Watchful eye, awareness, can fast develop trust between man & animal.  What if we consider other fellow humans too?  Could you model a safe light in their world of darkness?

Luke 33-36   – Just like a lamp which is lit for light is not hidden under a basket, but put on a high place for better vision, so we should be. - A light in the darkness for all to see and to be illuminated.   “... the eye is the lamp of your body.”  When the eye is healthy (original Hebrew-generous), your whole body is full of light.  But when eyes are not healthy, (Hebrew-stingy), your body is filled with darkness. (selfishness, lack of empathy, lack of compassion, lack of wisdom, lack of positive God driven possibilities).  So verse 35 tells us:
Take care. Keep watch. Be proactive in offering generosity, wellness, opportunity, and the Gospel, See to it that the “light” within you is not “darkness” . Filling your whole body - mind, spirit, & physical, with the light of God's teaching, builds generosity, hope & love, rather than envy, doubt and selfishness. When you do, your life will be just as full of light as when a lamp shines on you! 

Genesis 1: 3-4  God said, :Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness.
 
In Job, 33:28, Job praises God who has delivered him from going down to the pit (Not a happy place), “And I shall live to enjoy the light of life”.  

 Keep Watch !  Be ready to help others avert that pit. Become accountability partners together! Doing so, you will overcome many of your own temptations.  This shirt could be a first step toward the Light that you and humanity truly seek! 

     Still Waters – Denim Tshirt
Cowboy Application  – Everyone knows the essential need for water. To have a gently moving babbling brook type stream provides clean, life-sustenance. The average horse can use 6-10 gallons of water on an easy day. 15 to 22 gallons per day in a cowboy working environment is not unusual. 8 8oz glasses per day is a cardinal rule for humans.  Both horse & rider need the nourishment of water to be productive and healthy.  ON a “thirsty day”, nothing tastes better than a cool dip of H2O !  “Watering time” also provides a needed break in activities to replenish the spirit as well as your bodies.  Everyone who has ridden for half a day understands the pleasure of quenching our thirst!

 “Still Waters”  is a metaphor and a fact in the lives of mankind. “He leads me beside still waters”, comes from the 23^rd Psalm. King David wrote this from his experiences of both darkest times and times of rest.  He wrote truth just as relevant today as centuries ago.  Green pastures and gentle waters quiet the soul. When our soul is more relaxed, our minds can better reflect on the goodness, and the care our God provides for us.  

How are people reminded that we have a choice to enjoy the serenity of God's goodness & love?  When things get stressful, coming to a point we don't think we can handle it ourselves, remember God is our shepherd, our conscientious cowboy.  Let Him take the heavy burdens for a time, and then feel the grace, the sounds, sights, smells, and feelings of time with nature.  YOU are not alone!

Cowboy Application  – Given large eyes & large pupil of your horse, they have very good night vision with even a partial moon & stars.  On an extremely dark night, it might be good to allow your horse to “pick his way” along fields & lightly wooded areas.  Pitch black nights are seldom advisable for riding.  For best results, the rider & horse should negotiate darkness together. Allow your horse to choose his path & utilize his night vision.  Yet, think of how much easier it is to ride in light. - That's why we light our arenas!

Isaiah 50:10 says to let the one who walks in the dark, who has no light, trust in the name of the Lord & rely on their God.  When Jesus walked this earth, he told us (John 9:5) “While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”  And later, Acts 26:15-18,Jesus told Paul He was sending him to Jews & Gentiles to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light. To turn from Satan to the power of God, to receive forgiveness of sins & a place among those who are sanctified by faith in Jesus, Messiah. 

John 8:12 – Jesus said, “I am the Light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”  Allowing Jesus to become part of your “posse” gives the light, the sight you need, to guide you through!

Cowboy Application  - Allowing your children to grow among horses, ranch & farm life will enable abilities to make better life choices. They learn respect, without crippling fear, through the adults they depend upon.  When children grow, learning to enjoy a lifestyle of honorable responsibility, and gratitude for life's simple pleasures, their respect for life & rules become experiential.   – It sticks with them!

Do we give children opportunity to learn rules are for their protection and good, rather than something to avoid?  It's our duty as adults to enable our children with teaching, us living the example, giving encouragement and the words of God that will support them forever.

Deuteronomy 4:9 advises us, as children of God, to be careful, watching our Self closely, so we don't forget the marvelous things eyes have seen, & ears have heard. Repetitive teaching of such marvels to a child will endear God & you into their heart.  Let them understand that through the passing of God's protective rules of Love, generations will spend eternity together!   Deut 11:19 says to take every opportunity, often, to teach a child. Time – our most valuable asset – use it wisely! 

Ephesians 6:4 Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

How often we have heard that if we bring up a child in the ways of the Lord, even if he strays, he will return?  (Proverbs 22:6  Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

Cowboy Application – Horses are herd animals. The herd provides safety & security.  Because there is a pecking order that develops naturally among herds, most of the bunch depends upon the lead horse.  And, we train the horse to lean onto the trust they can hold with us as riders.  

How many times have we felt alone? Sometimes riding fence alone can be a lonely proposition.  Most times we actually like the solitude. But when we get that feeling of being alone, God reminds us we are not. Faith is easy when everything is going our way. The test is our relationship with the Lord when things get tough.  

A deep breath and a thankful prayer will often allow God to be present with us. We can begin to feel His presence as we herd those animals toward another pasture, or tamp that loose fence post. The feeling is our choice.  

Genesis 28:15 tells us that God is with us and will watch over us wherever we go. He will bring us back to the “promised land” when we feel apart.  Jacob had done many deceitful things to his brother Esau & his father Isaac. Even so – God was with him. He watched over Jacob, teaching him in ways Jacob did not always appreciate, until the timing was ready for Jacob to submit to God.  

Jacob awoke from a dream and realized the Lord was with him. He vowed to be loyal to his God, and his life turned for the better.  Depending on God is a strong thing: a cowboy way. What could you accomplish if you let Him ride herd over your life?  

And Jesus promises that He will be with us until the end of the age. This promise holds true. And His request is for us to go, and tell the world about Him. The power of the Father & of the Son & of the Holy Spirit, are with you as you teach others the Good News! - Matthew 28 19-20     Wearing your T-Shirt is a start!

Cowboy Application -  Throwing a rope requires skill & practice. Then once you catch, and the dally made, something has to be done with the “captor”!  Horsemanship and ranching require physical work. Strong hands and a strong heart are needed daily.  Coordination of horse & rider allow roping cattle,  Just like driving a truck is awkward at first, you'll master roping, through mastering your skills & honing in your horse. 

It's easy to be afraid when an ornery critter turns back at you.  It's easy to be nervous when attempting a catch through bush. But, it’s a great feeling when your task is accomplished. All the work, all the fears, all the failed attempts are well worth your time.  - You develop!  

Zechariah was a prophet who had to be strong. In the midst of lots going wrong around him, he told his neighbors that the Lord would restore.  In Zech 8:9, Israel had gone thru tough times yet God was going to restore the land and people.  Do you think Israel, Judah, listened & believed this message of hope the first time, second, 10^th time they heard it?   (How many times should you share the "Good News"?)

God through His prophet was preparing His people for the times to come. The scriptures are good for us today too. Let your hands (bodies, minds, faith) gain strength for the tasks to come. This promise is written for you to read and hear over & over again. Because we see through history that God's promises do happen, What if we assume they still will?  For you!  

Not all Christian life is easy. Just as iron sharpens iron, get ready now for the work to come, so the enjoyment of your efforts can be achieved. Be thankful for both easy roads and hard. They make you strong! (And the Proverb 27:7 is about people holding each other accountable so all become stronger!)  You are not alone in your strength. Do not be afraid.

Cowboy Application – Over the years, we've discovered our “armor” :  A good broad brim hat to protect from the sun & rain, chaps or chinks for protecting legs that get all kinds of dangerous exposure, saddles that are appropriate for the work to be accomplished, a great pair of comfortable boots to hold spurs in place and that won't twist on you as your weight shifts.  Ropes for their handiness, bandanas for dust & sweat, and a spirit of bravery that pulls it all together.

What happens to a greenhorn, a “dandy”, a “newbie”?  He or she needs guidance, even some cajoling, to understand safety, teamwork, and the spirit of being a cowboy, or cowgirl! Some old habits will need to be replaced with new habits.  They need to understand preparedness for what's to come in the open arena, in the thickness of brush, and on the ranch fields.  

Romans 13:12 The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.  Paul had just discoursed on Love, and the imminent immanence of our Lord Jesus Christ.  It is time. Don't rest in sin, thinking you'll be forgiven tomorrow for the sins of today. Don't test God. Be prepared. Use the tools of faith, scripture, prayer, and your god-given Spiritual Gifts to fight the battles that will come.

Cowboy Application – Ask anyone who hates their job, “Why are you still here?”  Money, power, prestige, fear of moving forward, unhealthy comfort zones, my parents expect this. It's all I know, …  What if you BE “maverick” enough to try something different, something exciting, something that explores you deepest values. DO something that feels as if you're contributing to something larger than your Self?  Yes!

Careers are 8-16 hours 4-7 days a week. Why spend half your life unhappy?  You have something special about you that God made uniquely you. Snowflakes, fingerprints. are all their own, with no other exactly like them.  If God cares for these, and lilies and sparrows, how much more He cares for your happiness!

Most people put their pants on 1 leg at a time. (exceptions: firefighters awakened in a hurry , and teenage girls lying on the bed getting jeans over the hips!)  Every  work has some things we need to develop to grow to our next stage. No corporation, no farm hires someone into a position for failure. Enjoy the menial tasks as much as those you will be doing from the varied exciting experiences you will acquire over time! 

Ecclesiastes 7:14  When times are good, be happy; but when times are bad, consider this: God has made the one as well as the other.  …     Eccles 3:12  I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live.         Ecclesiastes 5:19   Moreover, when God gives someone wealth and possessions, and the ability to enjoy them, to accept their lot and be happy in their toil—this is a gift of God.

What is your wealth? Is wealth really to hoard?  Key here is the ability to enjoy happiness.  We all have 6 Human needs: 1) Certainty that there is some stability. 2) Uncertainty, so we won't get bored to death. 3) Significance – to feel respected & honored. Yet the next three are most important. 4) Love/connection with God & people. Feeling that we are 5) Growing – on a path that will get us where we want to become. And 6) Contribution to someone or something higher than our Self, without expectation of praise or recognition – but just to know we can!  

Happiness is a choice. It's a mindset. It's a loving enjoyment through the journey of life – Not a destination!   Ecclesiastes 3: 22  So I saw that there is nothing better for a person than to enjoy their work, because that is their lot. For who can bring them to see what will happen after them?

Psalm 7:17    I will give thanks to the Lord because of his righteousness; I will sing the praises of the name of the Lord Most High.

Cowboy Application – Nobody understands the blessings of our Lord anymore than farm hands. Rain is a blessing. Sun is a blessing. Each season is a blessing. Both planting and harvest are blessings. Our ability to “cowboy” is a blessing.  When weather, or circumstance prevents one thing, there is enough to divert toward, that we can be thankful we are cowboys & cowgirls.

Sometimes we get so busy in our day-to-day, we forget appreciation  for that day. It's understandable. But there is a time to stand, or fall to our knees, and catch up on prayer.  Ecclesiastes 3: 1-8.  In all things give thanks!   

1 Thessalonians 5:18 says: "Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus."  (to be thankful)
Hebrews 5:7 - During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.  
     If Jesus, the Son, could submit, appreciate and thank Father God for His mission on earth, certainly we should follow His direction!

Psalm 27:4  - "One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple." 

Matthew 7:8  -"For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened."  Perhaps we should take care that our requests are godly, and thank Jesus for hearing our requests. Not everything we ask for might be for our best good. God knows best! Yet, when we live in gratitude, our requests are more likely to be in sync with God's purpose for our life.

John 17 is a good example of thanking God for being a part of His plan. Take it, and bring in your own context. Be real with Jesus!
